Madonna’s adopted daughter Mercy was to be returned to family, grandmother claims
Mercy, the Malawian child adopted by Madonna, was to be returned to her family from the orphanage she was living in, her grandmother has claimed.

APA-Lilongwe (Malawi) Malawi’s Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC), a network of 80 locally-based civil rights organisations, has expressed concern regarding the second adoption of a local child by US pop star Madonna, who has submitted her application to adopt three-year old Mercy James, an infant from an orphanage.
HRCC chairperson Undule Mwakasungura told local and international journalists Monday in Lilongwe that Malawi’s laws prohibited international or inter-country adoption of its citizens. (more…)
The singer, 50, was accompanied by her daughter Lourdes, 12, and sons Rocco, 8, and David, 3, whom she adopted from Malawi last year. And she and Lourdes visited Chinkhota Village, where Madonna has purchased a large tract of land to construct a girls’ school there, which sources say is modeled on the Leadership Academy for Girls that Oprah Winfrey built in South Africa.

The 50-year-old Madonna had almost finalised the 19-month long effort to adopt four-year-old Mercy James, but the child’s grandmother Lucy Chekechiwa is now trying to prevent this, reports thesun.co.uk.

LILONGWE (Reuters) – Malawi’s High Court has delayed its final ruling on whether U.S. pop diva Madonna may adopt a two-year-old Malawian boy until next week, her lawyer said on Thursday.
“We are finished with the proceedings today from our side, and the judge has decided to reserve his ruling on the case until next week because he has to review the recommendations from the Malawi Human Rights Commission on the adoption laws of Malawi,” Alan Chinula said. (more…)
