CBI files chargesheet in Preet Mandir case

It contains names of 114 witnesses, 168 documents against accused

The Special Crime Branch of the CBI on Tuesday filed an 87-page chargesheet against six accused including trustees of Preet Mandir and then chairman of Child Adoption Resource Agency (CARA) for their alleged involvement in illegal child procurement racket and extorting money from the parents. After 18 months, adoptions at Pune’s Preet Mandir resume

A ray of hope has dawned upon a number of orphans in Preet Mandir, whose adoptions had been held up for the last one-and-a-half years. On Thursday, a 2-year-old girl was finally united with her South African adoptive parents, bringing joy all around.

This was the first adoption at Preet Mandir after the Bombay high court’s green signal to resume the process, which had been halted for many months following a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe against the adoption agency. (more…)

South African woman waiting to adopt from Preetmandir asks activist to drop her demand for inquiry

The president of an NGO called Sakhee on Wednesday allegedly received a threat call from a South African woman waiting to adopt a baby from city-based Preetmandir. The caller asked the social activist, Anjali Pawar, to discontinue her efforts to ensure an investigation into whether the children waiting for adoption at Preetmandir were indeed destitute.

Pawar said the woman who called from South Africa introduced herself as Linda Ganess and repeatedly made abusive remarks over the phone. The woman was upset over the fact that Pawar had demanded an inquiry into the destitute status of each and every one of the 17 children waiting for adoption at Preetmandir, which has been under a cloud for some months over its adoption system. Grandmother Kisabai Lokhande

Grandmother Kisabai Lokhande placed her two grandchildren in Boarding School (for temporary care, education and protection) in the Observation Home Satara. From there girls were transferred to the orphanage Preet Mandir Pune These two grandchildren were without Grandmother’s consent given to adoptive parents in Spain, through the mediation of a Spanish adoption agency.

ACT supported the grandmother in filing a Criminal Writ Petition against the State parties and Adoption Agency in the Indian Courts. Now a SLP(Cri) has been filed by the Grandmother in Supreme Court of India.

Preet Mandir: mother says gave child for institutional care, not adoption

An HIV positive woman from Pune has approached the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), alleging that her 11-year-old child was given up for adoption from Preet Mandir even as she had not relinquished the child. The CWC will submitting the affidavit to the CBI for further investigation. The woman said she had given her child for institutional care and not adoption.

The special court in Pune on Friday remanded Joginder Singh Bhasin, the managing trustee of Preet Mandir, in judicial custody. Additional sessions judge J D Kulkarni passed the order.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had arrested 71-year-old Bhasin on Monday in Belapur, Navi Mumbai, in connection with the adoption racket. Bhasin was booked under charges of forgery, cheating, kidnapping and misappropriation of funds amounting to Rs 25.7 lakh. The court had remanded him in police custody till Friday.
