New Delhi, Oct 9 (PTI) Denmark has lifted ban on adoption of children from India, four months after it had stopped child adoptions from here in the wake of reports alleging that some of the children could have been abducted.
„We have forwarded a report prepared by the Central Adoption Resources Agency (CARA) which found the adoptions to be legal. Based on that, Denmark decided to lift the ban,“ Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Chowdhury said.
Denmark informed India about its decision to resume adoptions last week, she said.
The Scandinavian country had banned all adoptions from India in June this year after a report claimed that two children were adopted without the biological parents‘ approval from a Pune-based orphanage.
Denmark’s Consumer and Family Affairs Minister Carina Christensen had expressed concern over conditions in which adoptions took place.
Reports said one Ramesh Kulkarne claimed that after his wife’s death, he had temporarily put his two children in the orphanage.
However, he was barred from seeing his children at the orphanage and later he learnt that his children had been adopted by someone belonging to Denmark in 2004, the reports alleged.
Based on that, the CARA ordered a probe and suspended the licence of the orphanage.
Indian children are most sought for inter-country adoption. The US tops the list of overseas adoptions from the country with 945 Indian children being adopted from here in last three years.
