Many people tried for years to dismiss ACT for our strict UNCRC approach. We were considered „radical“.
Researchers, Law Professors, adult adoptee leaders, government officers ,journalists and of course adoption agencies and adoptive parents. And last but not least, the European Commission. They all fully embraced the Hague Adoption Convention, and not the UN Convention on the Rights of the child.
Seems they were wrong.
For years we advocated, explained our position. Not only, we also showed the raw effects of child trafficking, through field work. Our hard work bears results. Today were proven right. The Dutch government, host country of the Hague Adoption Convention, asked for expert advise on how to continue with the ailing adoption system. Today the Council of Criminal Justice and Protection of Juveniles (RSJ) recommended to STOP adopting children from abroad. Their conclusion is, without spelling it out and without holding anyone responsible, that it was legalised child trafficking. Demand driven, money…. what more to say
The RSJ believes that a demand-driven market „was created by the desire of Western parents to adopt foreign children and the financial interests involved. This market trades in children without family and does not always put the interests of the child first, says the RSJ.
„The fact that children’s homes are not emptier, does point out that it seems to be a demand-driven market. It also appeared that most of the children offered for adoption, do have parents. They are not orphans. You can then ask yourself if it was really the intention of that mother to give up the child, „said Calkoen. „It is better and more durable to help in the building of child protection in the country of origin.“
